Qatar

Qatar is a small emirate, which punches well above its weight due to its economic power and cultural influence via Al Jazeera. While Qatar Airlines is a major international airline bringing lots of tourists through Qatar relatively few stop and visit the country and that may be for good reason. Doha, the capital and the major tourist attraction, while compact and with an impressive skyline has relatively few things to offer besides its world class museums. The city is relatively new, founded in the 1820s, so the old downtown area is relatively small and unimpressive. Outside the city there aren’t that many major attractions besides the Al Zubarah Archaeological Site a 18th century pearling town and an Unesco World Heritage Site.

Our only visit to Qatar was in 2026, exploring Doha for a full day as a stopover between Tanzania and USA. We were quite impressed with the National Museum however the Corniche and some parks were a disappointment to us due to the number of louts and hawkers and taxis harrassing you while walking, something we haven’t encountered in most other countries we visited before. Souq Waqif, the old downtown, had some nice restaurants and an interesting falconry section but otherwise it was relatively unimpressive to us. Overall our recommendation would be to visit only as a stopover with 1-2 days being enough unless also going outside the capital.
