The major stop we planned for the day is Bru na Boinne World Heritage Site with its major megalithic tombs. However when we arrive there are no tickets left to enter Newgrange so we settle to view it from a distance while eating lunch at the cafe.

We also visit the museum which showcases the history of the area and has a few interesting artifacts with petroglyphs and carvings.

As we whiffed on Newgrange we decide to try nearby Dowth, still part of the Brú na Bóinne WHS. Our information says it is free to enter and we can’t really believe it until we discover it is true, and no one else is around either. Of course the tombs here are covered and not as reconstructed as Newgrange but that makes them even more special to us.

We even find a megalithic tomb that you can enter for free and look around. It is quite cool and we are very happy that we were aware of this option as otherwise we would have missed the tombs completely.
