Both days we stay here we take a route from Potsdamer Platz, where there is a market in both days, passing high rises and then towards the Brandenburger Tor. This is the easiest way to access the Berliner Dom on the first day and the Reichstag the second day. And also there are lots of souvenir stores and restaurants on the way to look at.
There are always some protests going on in or near the Potsdamer Platz, some are related to the war of Israel against Palestine and some to South American aboriginal rights and some we have no idea for what. Also looking more carefully we find a section of the wall here, we then discover that the wall actually passed through Potsdamer Platz and that there was nothing here till after the reunification when the modern skyscrappers were raised.
Walking towards the Brandenburger Tor the area is quite safe but boring. To us it seems that it has no soul likely as it was re-built after it was bombed in World War 2 and then the wall likely passed through here hindering any reconstruction.
We continue on passing by the most impressive building in this section, the T-Mobile shop which looks more futuristic and interesting than any other buildings here.
Then we follow a short section that touches on the large park in the middle of Berlin, Tiergarten. We will visit Tiergarten the next day so today we just pass enjoying this green area.
The next point of interest is something unexpected, the US embassy. We are not sure if it is a new one, after the fall of the wall, or the one that sat in Soviet territory but still it is quite a non-impressive building with the only thing that draws attention being all the armed guards around it.
Nearby is the last point of interest on our walk, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. If you would just be dropped here without knowing where you are you would not be able to determine what the concrete blocks represent but we know what they are supposed to represent so it is a somber walk through them exploring the many rows before continuing towards the Brandenburg Gate and the Under den Linden boulevard, our next goal for today.
