From our hotel near the Ostbahnhof we move with the help of a Bolt to our second hotel in Berlin in the middle of it all, the Ritz Carlton in the Postdamer Platz. We split our stay because the first hotel was cheaper and located on the train to Poznan while the second one allows us a better exploration of Berlin proper. It is quite an impressive hotel and the reception even make some magic to find us a room two hours earlier than check in and it even is an upgrade.
The room is a nice one and we enjoy it for the two nights that we are spending here. The views however are not that impressive, just a different wing of the hotel.
The bathroom is especially impressive with both a bath and shower, separate of course and a double sink, top luxury really.
We even get some complimentary gifts. Fresh water even carbonated is expected but a model Trabant with chocolate tasting plate is less expected and quite welcome. Trabant, the former iconic DDR car with the motto “You tried the best, now try the rest!”. Not really but it would fit :).
What we are also looking forward to is a lunch at Pots, a Michelin awarded restaurant that fortuitously is located inside the hotel. We have made the reservation prior and maybe the fact that we mentioned this at reception gave them the extra impetus to find us a room. We shouldn’t have bother with a reservation though, it is quite empty really when we arrive.
The dish du jour is asparagus everywhere in Germany as it is in season and quite popular so we order an Asparagus dish and then also a signature dish, Konigsberger Meatballs.
While we wait we have time to take in the restaurant, it is quite a fancy one as you would expect but the dress code is not that enforced which is nice.
For appetizers we get their famous complimentary bread with homemade butter and dip and a Flammkuchen which surprisingly has onions which we hate so it is not that welcome as the bread with butter.
The asparagus dish and the meatballs are both excellent and we really enjoy them and quite full are ready to explore the town in the afternoon going to the Under den Linden boulevard and the Berlin Dom and exploring the area.
We eat also breakfast the next day, also in Pots, but this time it is buffet style. As usual in Europe the food options are quite expansive, you have lots of cheeses and lots of meat and of course breads and jams.
You can also order one item of hot food per person and we order a couple and they are really good especially the eggs benedict, they were quite well prepared.
In the evening we buy some food street, currywurst, what else, and eat it in the room while ordering an in room breakfast for the next day. The reception told us it is included so we decided to try it, well included up to $1,000 level, I assume they serve you gold at that point to eat?
We receive the breakfast the next day at the asked for time and it is the most interesting in room hotel breakfast we have seen. It is served on a moving table with the top holding cutlery and the cold items but where are the hot items?
They are actually hidden inside the table and covered to ensure they are still hot when they arrive. So let’s see if they are still hot as we are quite hungry at this point.
And yes they are hot and quite good and quite full it is time to pick up our car which is quite an adventure as described in a separate post. But the hotel itself was one of the luxury hotels that really deserved that label in our opinion as we enjoyed almost everything during our visit from the food to the room, quite a special one.
