Today after a good breakfast we spent the whole day exploring north of Laughlin towards Las Vegas. The major attraction is the Keyhole Canyon and its petroglyphs but we also make multiple smaller stops on the way and afterwards to find caches.
The petroglyphs are more expansive than we expected. They start from the bottom of the hill and the go upwards and left and right so there is lots to explore.
Some of them seem to be more contemporary, certainly not going back to the Anasazi times.
Many of the original petroglyphs are quite faded but a photo is quite good at enhancing the lines and helping us see the aliens and antelopes all around us.
We also enter the Keyhole Canyon proper, you cannot really go that far without quite specialized equipment. In fact it seems it is used for rock climbing training by the only other people here.
We then explore a few more sites in the desert including a weird arch where it seems that a rock has conveniently fallen over creating the arch like formation.
As it gets late afternoon we can see clouds and rain rolling in. We decide to keep close to the car but not run back until the rain hits us. And luckily it doesn’t, it avoids our area, we are quite happy about it.
As the sun sets it is rarely out so we miss on a spectacular sunset but we still enjoy the views especially those with Joshua trees that are rare in this part of the desert. However tomorrow we plan to go into a Joshua tree forest to find caches, let’s see if the are still standing. However tonight it is time to unwind and eat some Chinese food from a takeout restaurant before going to sleep for the night.
