The Galloping Goose of Dolores

Colorado is a border state with Arizona but has only one corner in common. This makes any visit tricky in a one day drive as exemplified today when we have to drive 6 hours just to reach Colorado and another two hours to reach Telluride. At least the drive is scenic especially through the Navajo lands with red rocks all around us.

Our first stop is in Cortez a small touristy town close to the border with Arizona. We stop to find a cache and then continue to nearby Dolores for an exhibit that sounded interesting when we researched it.

The exhibit is about the Galloping Goose, a train that looks like bus. The story is that full blown steam train engines were cost prohibitive in this area so they developed the Galloping Goose at a much cheaper cost from an automobile. It was quite succesful and seven engines were built in total. Very fascinating indeed!

We then continue on as the sun is setting. The road is scenic as we approach Telluride and we have to stop a few times just to take photos. In Telluride it takes a bit to be able to find our lodging but after we do we soon fall asleep as it was a long tiring day.
