Passing through Vermillion Cliffs and camping on the North Rim plateau

From Flagstaff we are driving north crossing the Colorado River towards the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The bridge is near Lees Ferry and it is the place where a ferry over the Colorado River existed previously until the bridge was built. This time we pass without stopping and see the Colorado River far below us but only for a short glimpse.

Now on the north side of the river we enjoy the views of the red rocks of the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument and the surrounding area. This area is slot canyon land and we enjoy exploring it but not this time.

Then it is time to climb to the Kaibab plateau. Here we see the devastation from the forest fires, there are a lot of burned trees whenever we stop.

We stop a few times to find caches and there are some cool locations including a meadow surrounded by cliffs, it looks like a castle surrounded by stone turrets.

Nature wise we only see cows and not that many of them either. And wildflowers, quite a lot of them including a lot of mountain phlox.

We continue exploring waterholes and dirt roads, finding caches and scouting for a good camping spot for the night.

We find a beautiful lesser known viewpoint over the Grand Canyon and we explore the area a bit before finally finding a good camping spot where we settle for the night.
