After the Dom Museum our plan is to walk up towards the Amphitheater not that easy on the best of days. Today it is really hot, it is a heat wave, so it will be even worse but we have to finish our Roman Pass in a couple days. To avoid the direct sun as much as possible we decide to walk through the Elector Palace Garden and visit a couple more attractions on the way.
The Prince Elector Palace is really close which ultimately is not that suprising as the Prince Elector of Trier was the Archbishop of Trier so it makes sense to be close to the Dom. More surprising is how different the palace looks depending on which side you are seeing, from the one we are approaching it looks almost bland, which is not how we remember it.
Then on the next side the Palace is actually the Roman Basilica that was incorporated into the palace. The Roman Basilica is actually part of the Trier Unesco World Heritage Site and it was built between AD 300 and 310 as a Roman Palace basilica, part of the Roman emperors palace.
Now it is a Protestant Church and it was heavily damaged during World War 2 bombing with the roof burning away as the firefighters were not able to reach it. It has been since restored and while impressive and cool there isn’t a lot to see inside so after cooling down we move on.
The next side of the palace is the famous one. It is pink and built in Rococo style and quite impressive facing the beautiful garden, a couple fountains and a pond.
We enjoy the great views especially from a slight distance as it allows us to take in both the basilica and the palace. Not too far though as then it is barely visible, the gardens are quite extensive.
And then it is time to climb towards the Roman Amphitheater passing the Emperor Baths on the way that we will visit tomorrow. But today we have a goal and that is where we will go, the baths can wait till tomorrow.
