Magnificent Aix en Provence cathedral

While walking through Aix en Provence we reach the north side of the city and here one of the major attractions is the “Paroisse Cathédrale Saint Sauveur Aix-en-Provence”, the largest cathedral in Aix. It is huge especially after the many narrow streets and we take some time to admire it before deciding to enter it.

Entering we are surprised how austere the cathedral is, it almost doesn’t look like a Catholic church. But it has a cloister area and we see preparations for a wedding inside so it seems it is an active Catholic church, just a more austere one.

We explore the cathedral looking up and into the alcoves enjoying the cool interior. Cool like colder compared to the heat outside, not “cool”.

The only artwork inside the cathedral are the paintings and the tombs of the former bishops and donors. At least as far as we can tell and find.

There is also an impressive organ that is just tested for the wedding that we notice as we turn around returning towards the entrance.

But then they close the entrance to the main church, likely for the wedding but we start feeling trapped. However we notice a side chapel and that is where we go as that exit is still open and out we go. Now it is time to return via a different route through Aix towards the parking lot where our car is waiting.
