Today we want to hike anywhere in the White Mountains where it does not rain and maybe find some mushrooms along the way. Well that is more difficult than we think as the rain is following us everywhere we go. First we try to find a couple caches of US273, parking near the road and then entering the forest on the other side.
To our surprise there are a few mushrooms here, mostly Slippery Jacks. This is great and we enjoy them for a while before it starts to drizzl and then it is time to search for the cache so we can return to the car before it starts pouring.
It is a beautiful area and we would enjoy it if the rain didn’t pick up. Which it does unfortunately. Luckily we find the cache and then it is back to the car. And then we continue on hoping the rain will abate but it does not, it picks up in fact as we continue along the road stopping at a few more trailheads but it makes no sense to exit the car and get wet immediately. We even eat lunch trying to wait the rain out but no luck.
So we decide to descend towards Greer, our hope is that at lower altitudes there is no rain. And miraculously the rain stops and immediately we have a beautiful encounter with a flock of turkeys. Which includes even a few chicks, quite fun.
And then it is time to descend to US260 to drive to Greer and see if we can find another trail system to explore before the rain catches us again. We stop on the way at an overlook over the area, quite nice views and then it is an easy drive to Greer at least after we descend via the switchbacks from the White Mountain.
