Before leaving Trier we have to visit the University where we spent some special time while being younger. We start the visit with the apartment housing where one of us stayed for a period, it really looks unchanged from outside. There is a trail from here that leads to the University but today we decide to go by car as we are not sure if we can park a longer period in front of the apartments.
Surprisingly there is lots and lots of parking space but maybe this has to do a bit with the fact that it is summer and the students are back home. Anyway we are happy that there are parking spaces and on we go towards the University, it seems that it has been abandoned or at least the building closest to us.
Inside the university it looks a lot more maintained than the first building we see and soon we are in the middle of the campus near the highlight library which can be reached from multiple buildings via covered bridges.
We then explore the campus a bit more finding cool nooks and statues that we don’t remember from before while trying to find the Economics building.
At this point we start getting lost, in fact not lost exactly but really not finding a way through the buildings to the other side where we hope the Economics building is. In the end we take the nuclear option and walk around all of them to reach the other side.
This way we finally reach the University via the official way and reach the main building and then the front of the library which is quite impressive from all directions.
Next is the cafeteria which is now closed, it seems they take summer vacations quite seriously. There is not a lot to see so we decide to move on towards the Economics building which is close by.
To our surprise the building is open, guess we should have checked the buildings before taking the long way around the university to get here. There is no one inside however so we can take our time exploring our old haunts.
We even enter one of the classrooms that is open and relieve some of our student days, surprisingly it seems that classrooms haven’t changed that much since we last were here.
We then go to visit the last major area of the University that we remember, the shopping area. It seems eerily empty today and that is both because many stores are closed due to the holidays but also due to many being closed after going out of business.
There is only one store open today at that is a bookstore and we pass by it before returning back towards the main university and then our parking lot.
We now pass via a different route enjoying some Roman remains that we are sure weren’t here before and then arriving at the parking lot, it is now time for the Mariensaule our last stop in Trier proper.
