Starting from our AirBnB we make our way to the old city center via some streets that we have not used previously when we were in Trier, or at least we don’t remember. There are some beautiful old houses here, we expected a more modern area but this is quite an interesting one even though some of the houses are not that well maintained.
In fact it seems to be the red light area, no idea that Trier even had one. Continuing we pass near the trash cans for glass only, everything else is near the AirBnB but glass is only here about 10 minutes walk.
And then we notice a church in front of us and we decide to enter it, why not? As long as it is open and as far as we remember we never visited it before, it might be an interesting one.
The door is open so in we go into the empty church. We find out that this is the St Antonius church and that it was seriously damaged in WW2. It was built in the 15th century and it was a chapel connected to a much larger, now lost, church of St Marien zur Bruecke. What surprises as most is how empty it is but it is great for exploration.
Even though it is a smaller church it is actually quite large when no one is inside. We are also allowed to explore almost everything which is quite cool as we walk from altar to altar and enjoy the much cooler temperatures here.
One of the more famous sights inside is the Rococo pulpit featuring figures of the Evangelists and Church Fathers carved in 1762 and salvaged from a different church.
But we have lots that we want to see today so after one last look at the organ pipe we exit the church to make our way to the Thermen Am Viehmarkt nearby, something new compared to the last time we visited.
