Trip ideas
- Atlas Obscura is a great site to find out of the way places to visit almost anywhere across the world
- Baldhiker is a blog with some stunning pictures from across the world and information about more out of the way locations
- Wikiloc is a repository of hiking trail GPS tracks from around the world and indispensable for some routes that are not well marked
Flights and accomodations
- Kayak is one the first place we check for airplane fares due to the good comparisons and extensive filters (+/-3 days check is also quite useful)
- Google Flights is probably the first place we look when deciding where to go when we have no fixed place in our mind – it is a great tool to find cheap locations to go to
- Airbnb is a good place to look for special places to stay at especially for longer stays. Some of our best stays have been at Airbnbs so we highly recommend the site
- Booking is what we use in many cases to book hotels and even more special accomodations as they are easily searchable and have a wide selection of available properties
Other sites we find interesting
- Geocaching.com is something we use for both weekend and longer trips to set some goals and to find places that we never would have visited otherwise. During the years it has taken us to some great places especially when out hiking or in foreign countries.
- iNaturalist.org is our preferred site for recording nature observations. There are other sites (including the next one) that are more specialized but iNaturalist is covering the whole natural world, has an AI function to help with identification and also a large community of identifiers to help if you get it wrong
- eBird.org is the go to website for many birdwatchers and is a great place to identify where the birds you are looking for where last seen or what can be seen in the area you are travelling in
