Maryland, neighboring Washington is a state with a mix of history and industry. It has Baltimore a former industrial city jewel that has fallen on bad times and many Civil War battlegrounds including Antietam where the bloodiest day in US history happened. We visited Maryland once with a focus on the Civil War battlefields as we made our way north from Washington DC.

Last is a visit to Antietam where a major attack of the pro-slavery secessionist states was repulsed with great losses leading ultimately to the Emancipation Declaration - Monocacy, the battle that saved Washington, D.C.
We continue north with a stop at Monocacy to learn about a Civil War Battle that we knew little about but was important for the survival of Washington - Short stop in Cabin John Regional Park
