On the way to Pennsylvania and West Virginia we stop to visit the first of the national battlefields that we are interested in, Monocacy National Battlefield. We know little about the battle before arriving here and are surprised to hear that it might have been the battle that saved Washington during the Civil War from an invasion from the north. Here an outnumbered force of United States soldiers defended the position for a day against overwhelming Confederate Forces ensuring that reinforcements arrive to Washington to defend the capital.
However we find little to see besides the visitor center and fall colors so we decide to search for a cache and then move on.
We walk around following the trails and find the cache and also try to understand how the battle was fought but the information is limited at least where we are exploring so we move on north.
One of the major reasons we have decided to go north is that it allows us to visit and find caches in four states today. While we visit Virginia and Maryland more thoroughly we stop only for a few minutes in both Pennsylvania and West Virginia to see their Welcome Centers and find the caches before returning south into Maryland.
