It is getting hot in the Phoenix area so higher altitudes destinations are researched and discarded and in the end we decide on the West Clear Creek and the surrounding area. There are a few interesting caches here and we expect great views into the canyon and the views for certain do not disappoint.
There are also quite a few waterholes and where there are waterholes in Arizona there are cows, lots and lots of them usually. This time however just one the other ones must be dispersed through the area.
However soon we forget about the cows. Nearby is a water seep with lots of butterflies but even more excitingly an elk calf hiding from us on the ground. And really not doing a great job of it at all… We take a few photos and then move on to not disturb it or anger its parents who knows where they area.
Next is a slightly longer hike through a nice and shallow canyon on an old road. It is supposed to take us to a cache near a cabin and we are excited about it.
The cabin is small but cute and surprisingly functional. It seems to be used for impromptu camping outings but we wouldn’t call it a cabin though as it is really small.
We find the nearby cache and a few other ones including one that is hidden inside a fake turtle, very fun. And then it is time to return to Phoenix while avoiding the suddenly abundant cows after a great day out in the sun.
