The weather is relatively cool today so we decide on a short hike close to Phoenix. We have visited Blue Point Recreation Area before but never explored near the river and there are a few caches downriver so our plan is soon made. It becomes even more interesting when we find out that a ruined kiln may be on our chosen route, exactly what we like. Parking is more easy to find than we expected and soon we are on our way.
The trail starts as an old road but soon restricts to a single lane footpath perched precariously above the Salt River. The views are great but we have to be careful when passing other people to not throw them in the water.
Which might not be something that they would be opposed to given the number of kayaks and people swimming below us and on the beach further ahead.
Our route takes us soon inland and away from the river and here the the volume of traffic slows down significantly and we can start enjoying the flowers and finding caches. Maybe enjoying the flowers too much as one of us takes a tumble as a rock breaks below us as we shimmy along a ledge, nothing bad but blood was drawn unfortunately.
Even so we soldier on as we like the weather and also the birds and butterflies all around us.
And of course lizards, many lizards. And a squirrel, what more can we ask for ;)?
And then we arrive at the kiln, for something that we had no idea existed and isn’t signposted in any way it is in surprisingly good shape and impressive. We look at it from all around before other groups arrive, fun to find something like this in the desert.
On top there is a section close to the kiln that seems to be old wagon ruts but we are not 100% sure. What we are sure about is that we really like the flowers especially the cacti flowers that are everywhere around us.
We continue exploring find a last cache in a beautiful deserted area and then it is time to return back to base before it is getting too hot outside. Overall it was a very enjoyable, though brief, jaunt through the area near the Salt River.
