From Humayun’s Tomb it is time to explore another religion, Sikh religion, after yesterday’s exploration of Jain. And we do that at Gurdwara Bangla Sahib one of the most famous Sikh temples in Delhi. Our driver is not that enthused for whatever reason but at least there is an underground parking garage so there is a place for him to wait while we go outside trying to find the entrance to the temple. It was built in 1783 first as a small shrine and then expanded through the years to become the large temple it is today.
It is relatively easy to find the entrance and also the wardrobe where we have to leave our shoes while we visit the temple. We also have to cover our head with provided coverings, all of this is free and there is no begging for tip, which is a nice change from the other temple we visited. And then we are in and….we cannot enter the temple as there is a ceremony ongoing with someone, a priest, speaking over the loudspeakers. And everyone is blocked in their tracks including at the entrance to the temple.
We explore a bit outside while we wait for the ceremony to end, you can easily see who are the visitors, they are moving around, and devotees, they are standing and praying.
The ceremony continues so we decide to walk around the Holy Pond, also called Sarovar to look for birds and enjoy the views. It is a nice walk even though a bit cold while barefooted.
It is actually quite a nice walk with a beautiful view of the temple from the other side that we really enjoy. And then it is time to enter it, the ceremony is still ongoing but people got bored and started to move around the ceremony. No photos inside but really it is not that spectacular compared to the exterior. And then we get our shoes and driver and it is time to go towards our last goal of the day, India Gate.
