After freezing on Mount Ord the warmer temperatures of Deer Creek are welcome. We are planning to do a longer hike starting from the trailhead, about three miles, to the Gowan Burial Site, where an early Arizona settler was buried. From the start we are watched by cows, they can be quite unnerving when they stare at you for long periods of time.
As we start on the trail we find broken down windmills and then follow the flowing creek towards the burial site.
The burial site is easy to find as it is well marked and near the trail. Here lies Gowan who died at 49 years when returning from cabin and mine in the Mazatzal Mountains. We also find a cache nearby and then it is time to return to the car and back home after a beautiful but much colder day than expected.
