Next we continue on to the Wailua River State Park. Here it is not raining so we decide to explore a bit as the area is quite historic. We are not sure where to park as there is no dedicated parking but we find a spot on the streets and on we go.
There are multiple historic sights here in a small area. First Holoholoku Heiau which is thought to be Kauai’s oldest heiau and quite large also. Nearby is Pohaku Ho’ohanau, the royal birthstone, and Pohaku Piko, a ceremonial niche for a newborn child’s umbilical cord. An expectant mother of royal lineage would travel to Pohaku Ho’ohanau to deliver her child, helping to ensure its chiefly status.
Afterwards we take the stairs up from the historic area and we are surprised that they lead to a historic Chinese cemetery. We explore respectfully a bit and then continue on.
