Waimea Canyon State Park

Descending we decide to stop at all the other viewpoints along the way that are covered by our entrance ticket. The first one is Kalalau Lookout, the view might have been good but unfortunately all we see is fog.

Next we stop at the Kokee Natural History Museum to walk the nature trail here. Already in the parking lot we find a very tame Pacific Golden-Plower which is easy to photograph and we enjoy observing it for some time.

Soon we find the first Kauai White Hibiscus which is an endemic flower, with a limited distribution that we really wanted to see. And then we find a rooster that is caught in a trap and is jumping around like crazy, it is quite heartbreaking and we try to find anyone to help us free the rooster. No one is around unfortunately but in the end it escapes which makes us quite happy.

Next stop is at Waimea Canyon Lookout, part of Waimea Canyon State Park. It is one of the best places to view the Waimea Canyon and very busy usually but today it is late in the day and besides us there is only one more car in the parking lot.

The view is quite breathtaking as we expected and we spend quite some time enjoying the view and relaxing our sore feet.

It is getting dark and we have one more stop planned, the Iliau Nature Loop. It is a short loop showcasing many of the rare plants in the area and with some nice views of the Waimea Canyon.

We would have liked to hike the longer trail but even if we would have been here earlier we are too tired to try the longer trail the same day as the Pihea Trail. So we descend to the town and try to find an open restaurant which is quite difficult. Finally we find one with Hawaiian food which is actually great and full and tired we go to bed.
