Today we finally are going to visit the goal of our trip, Taos. We heard a lot about Taos during our previous New Mexico trips as being a special place and we are planning today to see what Taos is all about. We plan to visit also other sights along the way so we leave early and make our way north.
Our first stop is in Chimayo to visit the “Lourdes of the Southwest”, Santuario of Chimayo. The parking lot is quite large and after parking we start making our way towards the church.
As we walk we take our time to investigate all the little stores along the way with many of them selling chili peppers. They are quite popular in New Mexico and we always enjoy seeing the colors, but not so much buying them.
Then we arrive at El Santuario which is now one of the most important Catholic pilgrimage centers in the United States and one of the most beautiful examples of Spanish Colonial architecture in New Mexico. We explore the Sanctuario a bit which looks impressive but soon it is time to move on to the next attraction.
Next stop is at Las Trampas to visit the historic church, it is impressive but ultimately a short visit before continuing to Taos.
