Medieval Avallon, last stop outside Paris

From Fontenay Abbey it is a short drive to Avallon our last goal for the day. However on the way we decide to stop in Montjalin to find a geocache and to explore the historic church and the nearby castle that houses a car museum now.

Avallon is a historic city with a well preserved downtown area that seemed interesting enough for us to stop while making our way to Paris. We find a good parking place and soon start our exploration of the major sights.

And one of the biggest attractions is the Clock Tower, Tour de l’Horloge, from the 11th century which is pierced by a gateway that we pass through as we make our way though the historic center.

The other major attraction is the Collegiate Church of Saint Lazare with beautifully carved doors. Yes, doors because there are two of them next to each other with the second one being seemingly bricked up at some point. Or at least that is how it seems to us from the exterior.

The only open entrance into the church leads to a psychedelic displays of lights, quite unexpected but fun to explore.

We then walk for a while outside following the walls on the aptly named Promenade of Ramparts and finding another geocache before finding a group of people playing, honest to god, bocce. Not something that we really expected at all to see.

We then return towards the car passing by the Turreted House, another interesting attraction in Avallon. And then it is time to drive back to the Paris Airport, return the car and then take the subway to our hotel where we will spend the last two nights in France.
