St Cyril and Methodius Cathedral and the Dancing House

We start the day with another hearthy breakfast. It is surprising as usual how big the selection on offer is, we cannot decide what to start with. But we need to eat a lot as we have a full day planned and we are not sure when we will be able to eat lunch or dinner.

We discover also that there is an omelette bar where you can order a customized omelette and we do just that. It is quite good and we decide we are going to order a new one each following day we stay in Prague.

Today we start the day by taking the subway south for a couple stations so we can visit a few sites that are a bit further away from the downtown area. The ride is smooth and the train is not that full as we are right after rush hour.

We arrive at the elegant Resslova Street guarded by smart houses on both sides and start walking towards the Vltava River. There are two attractions in this short stretch of road and we plan on seeing both of them.

The first one is the St. Cyril and Methodius Cathedral and especially the crypt with which we start our visit. This was the location in 1942 of the last stand of Czech and Slovak fighters after they killed the Acting Reich Protector of Bohemia and Moravia, Reinhard Heydrich. There is a small through museum describing how the killing was planned and then how they were betrayed and the last stand.

You can also enter the actual crypt through a side entrance, the original one is closed off for now. Here there are busts for all the troops killed here during the standoff. A couple were killed during the fight and the rest suicided when they were running out of bullets to avoid being captured.

We then walk upstairs to also enter the church proper. It is the principal Czech and Slovak Orthodox Church, and as such a rare denomination in Prague.

Inside it is relatively small and under renovation but we enjoy the decorations and the more intimate atmosphere.

We can also see the original entrance to the crypt, closed now. It was quite small which created problems for the Nazi when they tried to storm the crypt. They were able to enter only after the defenders run out of bullets and commited suicide.

We continue down the street marvelling at the beautiful buildings along the way and soon we reach the Vltava River.

Here is the second attraction we wanted to see, the Dancing House. It is completely out of sync with all the other buildings on the street and it looks embedded in an older buildings. It is quite something else and worth seeing if close by.

We take another look from the bridge at the peaceful river and then it is time to take the tram to the Old Town area where we plan to spend the next hours.
