Basilica di San Simpliciano

After visiting Santa Maria del Carmine Church, just briefly, we make our way to Basilica of San Simpliciano. It is a 15th century Romanesque church with supposedly a beautiful interior. But we cannot see it yet because it is closed. Supposedly it will open in about half an hour so we decide to first make our way to the nearby Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Marco which is supposed to be open.

Returning from our visit from the nearby church we try to door again and miracle of miracles it is open. We are the only people inside which is quite humbling, a huge church just for us to visit (and a priest to keep an eye on us of course).

We really like the style and the fact that it is colder inside than the heat of the day. We spend some time exploring and even sitting in the pews relaxing.

The altar is as expected quite ornate and the side chapels are beautiful with lots of frescos and paintings. We are sad we have to leave the cool interior but such is the fate of the explorers, there is always more to see.
