Grotte du Grand Roc and other closed caves

It is still early after the tour so we drive to a few other caves of the Dordogne trying to find one that is open to visit it. Unfortunately all of them are closed that day or open in the afternoon. We are especially surprised that the Grotte de Rouffignac is closed as we had a different timetable than they were using.

At least the road is quite scenic as we follow various rivers and catch glimpses of castles along the way. Many of them must be private as there are no signs on the road, very mysterious.

On the way back we stop at the Grotte du Grand Roc and walk on a hiking trail to a dangerous looking rock overhang over the road that we were driving on. We can see the grottes but where is the entrance?

It is actually nearby and as expected is closed, everything is closed in this area, quite weird. It looks like a great place to visit, too bad.

Passing through Eyzies de Tayac which is in the centre of the cave area and close to Font de Gaume we also stop at a nice looking church that we admired as we were walking to the rock overhang. It is quite old (and closed) so we take a look from the outside before moving on.

We then drive to the Grotte de Combarelles to check whether it is open, a last gasp check. It is not but at least we can see the entrance and also the old building close to it. With this we decide it is not worth continuing trying and decide to leave the Dordogne region and continuing on our way south.
