To escape the heat we plan a hike on the Arizona Trail near Flagstaff. It is a long drive and we arrive relatively late in the day to the section we have chosen. It is just off Lake Mary Rd on the other side from Mormon Lake and Lake Mary.
The trail section here is on a flat plateau and we do a few short detours to find caches and observe the area from impromptu overlooks.
The views are quite good and we really like that we don’t have to hike up and down and can follow the flat trail across the plateau.
We spend the rest of the day hiking on the Arizona Trail, finding caches and in general enjoying the great weather. Unfortunately there is not much pine coverage which is a problem on a sunny day like today. Still there are some nice views of the San Francisco Peaks and overall we have a great time before we have to return back to Phoenix and the heat.
