After exploring the downtown area for hours we are quite hungry so we decide to make our way to our planned lunch spot, the Central Market. It is slightly outside the downtown area so to get there we have to pass through less touristy areas of the downtown including a section with non-restored buildings.
We pass over the tramway lines that circles the downtown area and then have to pass multiple large, busy roads and a bridge before arriving at the market.
The main structures of the Central Market are five pavilions constructed by reusing old German Zeppelin hangars and incorporating Neoclassicism and Art Deco styles. Each of the hangars has a theme and supposedly one is fast food oriented which is where we want to get our lunch.
The first one we assume is the Fish Hall, it is full of different types of fishes we never saw before prepared in different ways. It is also very smelly and we are still quite hungry so we move on to the next one.
We pass through all the halls and while we find the cheese section, the meat section we never find the extensive fast food section we read about. The fast food area we find is just a few small restaurants, far fewer than in a mall, all of them very busy and with no seating. In short it is not what we hoped for and soon we decide to return to the downtown area and find a sitdown restaurant.
Still we buy a couple bakery items on the way out so we have some energy for the “long” way back over the canal and into the downtown area.
As we return we pass by the canal and notice that it is actually used for boat tours, quite surprising as the area is not that scenic.
