After visiting the fortified church in Sebes we return back to the car for a short drive to the Calnic Fortress a nearby Unesco World Heritage Site. We find a good parking space, pay the entrance fee and then we are in starting with the small and cozy church. There are no other visitors today so we have the whole church and site for ourselves.
Outside the church is surrounded by high well maintained walls, there is a reason it is called a fortified church after all. It is here where the people retreated during invasions which were quite often in the medieval times.
And the walls go on and on all around the church. They are quite impressive with watchtowers all around but most of them are not open to visit.
The entrance is particularily fortified, it makes sense and it looks quite impressive. This is even more so if you remember that most fortresses at the time were built by nobles and this was built by the villagers themselves.
There are some interesting exhibits in one of the buildings with musical instruments and old painted chests that we explore for some time.
There are some textiles too and our favorite, painted eggs. We haven’t seen them before in a museum in Romania so that is quite interesting.
We explore a few more of the buildings but the only other interesting one we find is the cellar with some huge barrels, not sure if they are full or not. And then we return back to Sebes to meet with the rest of our relatives for a nice dinner and then go to sleep as we have a long day ahead of us.
