Short hike to Lover’s Cave

From Flycatcher Creek we drive round the island stopping for some viewpoints but mostly keeping our eyes fixed on the goal, the trail to Lover’s Cave. But first we stop in Iranmeylek, a major town on the island to buy stuff from one of the two supermarkets on the island.

And then we eat part of it as lunch on a nice overlook before continuing on. We can actually see our next goal from here even though we don’t know it yet.

Luckily there is a parking lot close to the trailhead and in fact it leads to another attraction, the Ghost Cave. This one in our understanding was part of an old trail and we want to explore it a bit and see where it leads.

Unfortunately it was built for shorter people we are in danger to hit our head constantly but manage to do it only once. And on the other side…is the street again with some construction equipment. And it doesn’t appear we can descend so we decide to return via the cave and then reach the trailhead on the road.

This is not without issues either as there is no sidewalk for pedestrians, probably because the cave would have taken as to the trailhead if only we would have trusted that there are some stairs at the end.

The trail to Lover’s Cove is beautiful but with no shade which especially in the sun can make it a bit uncomfortable. We stop at every small shrub to use the shade to recuperate a bit and enjoy the views before moving on.

It is not a long trail and at the end is a quasi picnic area with a covered shelter and lots of goats. At this point we don’t need the shelter anymore as the clouds have moved in and it seems it will rain. The weather really changes fast here.

The Lover’s Cave is actually an arch which has a legend attached but we simply enjoy the views and also the birds. First there are the ubiquitous, here at least, Blue Rock Thrushes but more special to us are the two Pacific Reef Heron interacting on the cliffs, they are a lifer for us.

With some drops of rain falling we make our way to a swimming hole nearby. The going is slow as the terrain is full of sharp coral but we go slow and make steady progress towards it.

Unfortunately the swimming hole is mostly empty of water but still we descend and look for fishes in the remaining water before retreating to the car to avoid the rain. Which stops anyway and doesn’t restart today, phew. From here we continue the drive around the island we have one more stop planned before checking in.
