An afternoon of checking in and snorkeling

As the check in time for our accomodation is in the afternoon we could not check in when we arrived with the ferry. So we circumnavigated the island exploring multiple sights and passing by the accomodation on the way once and now we return for the second time in the afternoon. Our hostess gave us some indications and even showed us a video but we are not 100% even so where everything is. We are happy when we find the parking place and then lose ourselves in the maze of houses before finally find the right entrance.

There is literally no one else in the house as we make our way to the kitchen, after taking our shoes off of course and using a couple of the provided flip flops. The kitchen is in a state of masterful disarray, I am sure the hostess knows where everything is but we are scared to even enter it so we don’t break something.

we then go up the stairs to the guest rooms and find our assigned room easily. It is six person room supposedly but we are not sure how they could do anything else than sleep as it is quite cramped besides the beds being lined up on the floor. At least we do have A/C besides the fan on the ceiling and it does work quite nicely, phew.

All rooms on Lanyu that we could reserve had some issues, in this case the issue was that we do not have an en suite bathroom. However with some luck it is just us and some other couple in the accomodation and we do not overlap at all in the times we are using the bathroom, which, phew, is the only thing we can say.

Outside the dogs are keeping a watchful eye on us but do not attack or bark aggresively which is good as they are quite scary. We are surprised at what they protect, or maybe are trying to eat, there are clumps of drying flying fish, something we wanted to see and here it is right at our accomodation’s entrance.

Our room has a nice shaded terrace where we eat dinner and breakfast but on top of that it also has a rooftop terrace. This one is not shaded and certainly not recommended during the day if the sun is shining. But the views are beautiful.

There is not a lot to do at the accomodation and it is hot inside so soon we are on our way again, this time we want to find a famous snorkeling spot nearby and take a bath. But on the way we spot something interesting and brake hard, there is a pigeon in the tree! There are three possible species but in this case it is a Whistling Green-Pigeon, our first one and in fact the only species of pigeon we will see on the island.

The snorkeling spot is not far and to our surprise there are a couple groups there already and a fisherman separately fishing on the shore. Luckily as we dress up the other groups decide to leave so when we enter we are the only ones in the water.

The water is nice and warm however the entrance is a bit iffy with the sharp coral demanding undivided attention until we finally make it in the water. However it is worth it, there are lots of fish and the water is relatively quiet here allowing for a nice time snorkeling.

There are even deep crevasses here that we avoid just in case something bigger pops out to attack us. And then it is time to exit and take one more look at the swimming hole from outside before moving on.

Not so fast though, looking more carefully on land we see a few birds moving back and forth. After a bit of checking we decide that they are the Blue Rock Thrush we already have seen and a Gray Wagtail which we haven’t seen yet on Lanyu. And then it is time to return to the car, change our clothes and go to eat dinner at the only night market on the island.
