Today we are planning a hike relatively close to our home in fact we can walk to the trailhead entrance. It is a nice walk with sidewalks and we can explore on the way all the new buildings that are getting built and to look for the elusive nighthawks.
There is a prominent sign when entering the park that you should not forget to pay. We are curious if many people are paying and they are, the receptacle is full with money. Or empty envelopes like ours that just have the info of their Annual Pass who knows.
And in we go, there is a bewildering array of trail choices but we decide to follow the caches. they are mostly along the Moon Rock Trail so that is what we try to reach and then follow while enjoying the great views of the Usery Mountains or Scarface in the distance.
The trail is quite flat as it avoids washes or rock outcrops, we see them from a distance only. What it doesn’t avoid is sharp turns which sometimes might be a surprise to cyclists and maybe helps them explore the surrounding desert.
The caches in the area are cool and easy to find as we follow the Moon Rock Trail in a long loop as it intersects multiple other trails including the Maricopa Trail.
Today it is supposed to rain, and it will, but at this point there are no major signs especially when we look towards the Usery Mountains which are bathed in the afternoon light.
As the trail twists and turns we also get glimpses and then some great views of the Superstition Mountains, that is where the storm is coming from as we can easily see.
The last part of trail follows the levee that protects the houses from floods. The views here are quite special we just have to keep an eye out for speeding bicycles. And then we are back at the parking for the short additonal hike home. It was great to be out again after being mostly cooped in for a couple months, looking forward to restarting our hikes!
