Jenniex House and Humber Trail

Today we are exploring closer to Rocky Harbour and our AirBnB. We start with a recommendation from our host, Jenniex House and Humber Trail. The host recommended it on account of the lookout but we decided to explore a bit more and even find a few caches. The parking lot is quite large and it has a historic weathervane that is out only during the summer, and it still is summer technically.

The views from Photographer’s Lookout are amazing especially with fog and rain on the Tablelands on the other side of the fjord. We are a bit worried as that is where we are going ultimately but there is nothing that can be done so we take photos, take in the the views and then enter Jenniex House.

Inside we find out that the visit is free and it has a gift shop on the bottom floor with the majority of exhibits on the top floor. It is interesting to learn that this was not the first location of the house and it was moved here relatively recent historically. This is the second house we see this happening in Newfoundland, wonder if it was a common occurence and whether it is easier here compared to other states/countries? The exhibits are a mishmash of different objects so we take our time to walk through and explore everything.

We can even see how the exhibits can be a bit creepy with dolls that would not be out of place in a Chucky movie and some objects that seem more like torture implements than household objects.

And then it is time to explore the trail. It says closed at the entrance but there are people on it and there is no sign anything is wrong with it so on we go, we can always return if something blocks the trail, right? In fact hikers coming the other way confirm there is no issue with the boardwalk so not sure what the closed sign is about.

we enjoy the hike with some very curious Boreal Chickadees flying within reach a few times and just waiting for us to…not sure what? Maybe they just enjoy seeing hikers.

There is then an overlook with the same story, there is a closed banner at the bottom. Someone has ripped it off and everything seems sturdy so up we go to take in the great views. There is a cruise ship in the sound and we are wondering what the people are going to visit and whether our paths will intersect.

We then continue a bit further to the next cache. here the boardwalk is a bit slanted but nothing that would warrant closing the trail and then we arrive at a rest area from which the trail is going down significantly. There is also a cache here so we decide that it is our turnaround point. We spend some time here and then return to the car explore Norris Point and then it is time to drive towards the Tablelands.
