Arriving and living in a cave in Tenerife

We return the rental car easily which is good and then enter the airport ready for our flight later in the afternoon. Luckily Nice has a lounge so that is where we are going while waiting. We are happy that there is no queue and we find a place and then it is time to explore what is available in the hour before our plane is boarding.

Similarly to when we arrived we have to walk outside to get to the plane, luckily it is not raining but it could be quite annoying if that would happen. We have good seats and soon are ready for the relatively long flight to Tenerife.

We pick up the rental car at the airport, an Audi that we have to fight to not overinsure and then drive towards our AirBnB with a stop at a gas station to buy water and some basic food. We stay a bit inland at a quite eccentric AirBnB with each room and bathroom being hosted in a separate cave. Just finding it is an adventure driving on a one way lane road and then descending via a narrow dirt road to the AirBnB.

The main bedroom is quite nice but not having a bathroom is quite a problem as it means we have to exit every time when we want to wash our hands or go to the toilet.

In fact the shower is in a different section versus the toilet making it quite difficult to use the bathroom as we are used to. The bonus for this AirBnB is the wood heated jacuzzi that we intended to use but never got to.

The owner was quite nice and left us some very good wine and a pizza that we both consume during our stay here and are very welcome given that otherwise it would have difficult to find a store or restaurant close by.

In the evening we stay outside and enjoy the views and the birds, including our first endemic ones while eating the pizza and drinking wine. Tomorrow we have a short day of exploration planned before returning to the airport to pick up our relative.

In the morning we walk through the area exploring the seemingly historic houses with gardens fed via old aqueducts while looking for birds. The only birds that we see here however are free range chickens roaming through the undergrowth before returning to our compound.

However on the walls of our cave we find again one of the more common endemics the Canary Islands Chiffchaff and this time we are able to take a good photo before returning to our kitchen and preparing an omelette from the fresh eggs received from our host.

After picking up our relatives from the airport we stop at a bodega on the way to celebrate our meeting. There aren’t many things open on Sunday and the one we choose looks quite interesting, really. There is no one else eating here, everyone else is at the bar drinking beer and talking loudly.

Making ourselves understood with the owner who doesn’t speak English is quite fun and our relatives is quite scared about what we ordered without being able to understand each other. But the food is quite good with a fresh appetizer and some goat meat dish which was easily shareable.

Full we move to the next attraction a supermarket to buy provisions for the next days as who knows when we will be able to stop at one again.

In the evening we discover that the shower does not work so the AirBnB owner allows us to use the one in a nearby property they also own. On the way we meet the chicken that provided the fresh eggs we ate in the morning and then have time to explore the quite different AirBnB where the shower actually works, yay!
