After our visit to Purana Qila it is time to move towards Old Delhi. We have time now to examine more carefully the traffic in Delhi, it can be quite overwhelming and it is not made easier by the many police barricades haphazardly blocking parts of the road. There is no police at them, they are simply blocking the street for no discernable reason forcing cars to go around them. And of course the tuk-tulks and motorcycles help with the chaos as they are trying to pass right, left, over or under, they do not care really.
Our next stop is Raj Ghat right at the border of Old Delhi. It is free to enter, a nice change from other locations and it is an important as it is where Mahatma Gandhi was cremated after being killed by a Hindu extremist.
There are lots of people here however because we observe that the requirement is that we have to take the shoes off quite far away from the memorial we decide to explore a bit around before doing that, maybe we can see the memorial before going barefoot on wet pavement. Which is not something we are looking forward on this cold day.
And there is an observation platform of Raj Ghat with a good view and we decide that this is as close as we want to get. It is still cordoned off so we could only arguably get a bit closer, why bother as the view is as good from here and at least we won’t get wet on our feet so early on the day.
We explore the gardens a bit more seeing crows and squirrels and then it is back to the car and then to the Red Fort, the major attraction for the day.
