University “Politehnica” Bucharest, a blast from the past

We start in the morning with a visit to the cemetery to pay our respects to our recently deceased relative. From there we have a choice of public transportation to get to our goal for the day, the University “Politehnica” Bucharest. We choose the subway, it is the easiest and most reliable in our opinion.

We have taken some classes at this university a long period ago so we are curious how it changed over the years. We can see the difference as soon as we exit the subway, there is a long walk through a park to a gate that didn’t exist previously, luckily it is open and we can enter. Inside the campus there are more streets and more cars, in our memory there were no cars allowed inside the campus previously.

The central building, the Dean’s office, was always for us the UFO building due to the cupola on top that looks like an UFO ready to leave at any minute. We spent quite some time inside it but the usual door is closed, we find out there is a new section connecting it to another building which is where the door has relocated. It now has a guard also but he doesn’t really care who enters the building so in we go.

Inside the central building is quite impressive. It seems like an architectural achievement, we especially like the cupola/UFO that you can see from the middle of the building. Unfortunately there are some small children running around shouting loudly which disturbs the otherwise nice quiet of the building.

There are a few interesting exhibits, with lots of paintings from famous mathematicians and engineers that we recognize and one of the first airplanes in the world built by an Romanian inventor, Vlaicu. Now the model plane was holding a paper plane on top of it likely thrown by an enterprising student, fun!

We climb to the top of the building and we notice another new addition, a cafeteria. We walk through it but it is kid central and very noisy so we decide to leave and explore the other buildings.

It is an interesting building where we also had some classes, even though at that point it was not connected to the main building. We spend some time exploring the building and trying not to look too suspicious…

…which is quite difficult when everything is empty. Like no one on the hallways so whenever we meet a person we really stand out. Luckily no one seems to care but we are happy when we exit, now it is time to search the Botanical Garden which is nearby and we always wanted to visit but never made it.
