From the Vltava it is a short ten minutes walk to the Petrin Hill foothills. The trouble is that no one knows where to buy a daypass for public transport, including the supermarkets where all the guidebooks are saying you should buy them?!? We decide to try at the funicular itself but there is one more stop we want to do before that. It is at the Memorial to the Victims of Communism, an interesting an sobering monument for all the people killed and tortured during the years of Communism in Czechia.
Luckily the funicular station is selling day tickets and we are able to buy them and then it is time to go up and up and up towards the top of Petrin Hill. It is higher than it looked from the below but we arrive safely up top.
Next it is time to make our way to Strahov Monastery while visiting a few tourist sites along the way and looking for birds and other wildlife.
The major attraction is Petrin Tower, it is quite popular with the visitors and it also has a well stocked tourism office inside. We also stop at St Lawrence Church but it is not open and the other attractions are fee based and we simply don’t have the time for them.
We see a few birds in the forest including Eurasian Jays and many Eurasian Nuthatches. We also like the fact that there are a few water fountains that we can use to replenish our water bottles on these hot days.
We then continue towards the Strahov Monastery on a level but not really shaded trail. We take refuge for a few times below the trees admiring the old city wall before finally descending into the Strahov Monastery compound for the first major objective of the day.
