After visiting Santa Maria del Carmine Church, and then being faced with the closed doors at Basilica of San Simpliciano we walk to the last of the churches we want to visit in Brera, the Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Marco which is supposed to be open. And it is actually open with no one else inside which is just how we like it.
It is quite a large church, dating from 1254 and modified heavily since. It is famous since young Mozart resided in the monastery for a few month in 1770 and hopefully he was as impressed as us by the magnificent church.
It has quite a few details to admire, most of them in the side chapels which can be quite impressive on their own.
One of the interesting details is a wax statuette dressed in 19th century style that we first assume is a relic but it is just decoration.
The main altar is suitably impressive but we really are more impressed by the ceilings which are beautifully painted.
And none is more beautiful than the ceiling representing heaven (or hell?). There are lots of people and angels and the detail on them is impressive.
Existing the church and after visiting the other churches it is time to look for dinner. We try a few streets but even though we remain impressed by the buildings we are thoroughly unimpressed by the restaurants on offer.
Still it is a nice area to walk about and notice the little details like a store that doesn’t seem to sell anything but has invite-only entry and the small Smart-like cars which are quite common.
Finally we discover the area of Brera which has a higher concentration of restaurants and finally find one that matches what we are looking for and has a few open spaces.
And what we really want is an Osso Bucco. And to try another spaghetti dish. Here we can get both and while the Osso Bucco is all we expected, the spaghetti dish again is a bit disappointing. But at least we are full now to spend another hour walking around exploring the downtown area while searching for the famous downtown Starbucks store.
