Lunch in Southwark, London

Our hotel does not offer free breakfast and we are in a bit of a hurry as our relatives have to leave late afternoon. So we decide to combine sightseeing with breakfast and eat in central London. For that we have to take the corridors to the terminal which is a bit like walking in a horror movie on an abandoned starship. Weird lights and minimalistic architecture abound.

The subway however is a disappointment. We remember it as being much cleaner, we are afraid almost to sit down on the seats as they are dirty and don’t seem to ever have been cleaned. The subway itself looks quite tired and dirty, it feels like we are in a third world country really. The subway station are quite clean though even though many don’t have working escalators, or not all of them are working.

One of the request from our relatives was to see the shard so we exit near London Bridge and the first thing we see is…the Shard. It is quite impressively high but it is difficult to convery that into a photo really.

We then pass through the very busy Borough Market towards Southwark Cathedral looking for a place to have lunch or breakfast.

We find a pub/inn right on the Thames riverside and we decide to eat outside as the views are exceptional and we hope we can survive the relativ cold of the London morning.

As we wait we are informed that we can either order breakfast in the next 20 minutes or we have to wait 20 minutes to order lunch. As the breakfast selection is not impressive we decide to wait for lunch while watching the swans float by.

At exactly 11 we are ready to order and the food soon arrives. It is reasonably good for such a touristy place and full we are ready to continue our exploration.

For that we have to return to the subway through the crazy busy market area. You can barely push through the throngs of people but we make it through and then it is time to continue towards Greenwich our main destination for the day.
