The first part of our trip is taking us through the famous Snowdonia Mountains NP. It is something that we looked forward to hike, and we will continue looking forward as today is not the day. Today we are just going to drive through them with a couple of short stops as our day is already full with multiple castles and other stops. And also it is bitter cold, almost freezing at mountain elevation. The first stop is at the Ugly House, Ty Hyll, which is not ugly at all but quite charming. It’s gotten the name from the unfinished look but we quite like it. It is also a teahouse but we are fresh from breakfast so we take a few pictures and then move on.
We have planned our route to take us through the heart of the mountains and as the temperatures plummet towards 0 C we wonder if we have bitten off more than our car can chew. Basically we are afraid of ice and snow on the road. However we do not encounter either so we can enjoy the great views from inside the car and dream of possible hikes through the landscape.
We make only one stop to find a geocache and it is a doozy, the winds are gale-force and we are almost blown away by the gusts but we make it in the end. And then we see the sheep sitting on the grass and laughing at us in their warm wool, oh well, they are prepared for these temperatures and we are not.
The road also passes through many traditional small villages with stone walls on both sides. They look cool until sheep decide to enter the road, then suddenly you discover that you have no room to maneuver and have to wait them out to go wherever they want to go.
