The first of the churches we have planned to stop today is the Church of Saint Nicholas of the Roof, an 11 century Byzantine monastery near Kakopetria so it is a short drive. It is the only surviving Middle Byzantine monastery church and prospered till the Frankish rule around the 12th century. It is one of the 10 Unesco World Heritage churches in Cyprus and free to enter during quite limited hours.
While there are no paintings outside, inside it is quite colorful. There are some beautiful frescoes with saints and representations of the life of Jesus or other saints. We enjoy exploring it but then it is time to move on to the next church on our itinerary which is quite far away.
