On the way to the Turkish side of Nicosia

Today is the day our relatives are leaving Cyprus and we take them to the airport before leaving ourselves towards Nicosia. The airport is quite empty this early in the morning which is good as there aren’t that many places to sit. We have time to explore a bit and discover that one art work on the wall is actually from the Nicosia airport and was moved here during the war between the Turkish and Greek communities.

Before leaving the Larnaca area we decide to do one more stop at the Salt Lake to do some birdwatching. Today we find a few flamingoes closer to the shore which is quite cool.

There are no special birds but we still see a few fun ones like resting Barn Swallows and of course quite a few Crested Larks.

The drive to Nicosia is uneventful and the parking area we chose is quite close to the buffer zone so we don’t have to walk a lot to get to the Turkish side.

The weather is quite worrying as we make our way to Ledras street. It even sprinkles a few times but nothing too bad so we decide to continue on on the pedestrian Ledras street towards the border.

We take heart given the fact that the street is partly covered against rain so we hopefully have a way to escape any more meaningful shower. And then we are at the police control station on the Greek side of the border and after a quick check we pass the control post and are into no man’s land as we make our way to the Turkish Cypriot border.
