We tried hard to find someplace to go during the holidays but the tickets were crazy expensive to closer warmer locations and we didn’t have enough PTO time to go to the cheaper farther away options. And then we looked during Martin Luther King holiday weekend and lo and behold we found relatively cheap tickets to the Grand Cayman. Never mind that this is a split ticket flying United out and American back and all the issues this might entail we eagerly jump on the opportunity to visit a new country.
And then we see how much the hotels cost…ouch…it is an expensive island. But we have already booked the tickets and done the preliminary research which made us quite excited about what we thought is a one-tone beach island so we try to reduce our exposure to any cancellations by booking AirBnBs with generous cancellation periods and splitting the trip in two with the more expensive cancellable accomodation at the end and on we go.
The trip is a big success for us, the island is surprisingly varied given its small size and it has a very relaxed vibe especially on the East End. The attractions that we visit are nature related with lots of birdwatching and turtlewatching, beach related and even culture related and when we leave we regret not having an additional day to explore a bit more.
