After work today we are restless and decide to go for a short hike near the Salt River to birdwatch and geocache. The parking lot that we choose is near the Blue Point area that we visited recently as we saw then a few caches on the other side of he road that seemed interesting to find. From the parking lot it is a short walk to the river side, the river is quite full today and flowing quite rapidly.
It is the golden hour before sunset and we enjoy the beautiful views over the nearby mountains that we also saw during our Blue Point hike. It is a beautiful desert landscape and even though we see no horses, snakes or tarantulas it is still a very enjoyable hike.
With the river there are a few waterbirds loitering on the water. On the shore we see a spotter sandpiper and on the water a pod of coots is crossing the river looking carefully in all directions. They are quite funny and when they notice us they soon change direction.
Returning we find a lot more birds especially on the water side but the loudest are by far the woodpeckers that are watching us from the saguaro tops and always loudly proclaim they have seen us. We arrive at the parking lot earlier than on the Blue Point hike and enjoy the great views a bit more before returning home after a short hike with lots of birds and a couple caches found.
