Our base for eastern Estonia, Rakvere

Arriving in Rakvere it is time to search for our AirBnB. It is surprisingly large and spread across two levels with a full bedroom and bathroom and each level and the kitchen at the bottom level. It is time to relax a bit and explore and make our bedroom and bathroom choices.

The bedroom at the top floor and the living room even have balconies with some nice views of the neighborhood. But we have not as much time to explore and relax as we hoped as it is time to eat dinner. There are not many restaurants here that are open at this time but the one that we find looks quite good so back to the car we go for the short drive to the downtown area.

We are the only people at a table in the restaurant however the menu is great and after we order it is time to relax and discuss our plans for next day. We are surprised that one in our party seems to be cold and doesn’t feel well and we certainly hope that she can recover by the next day as we have lots of stuff planned.

The food itself is very good and we like the borscht especially and quite full we return back to the AirBnB to rest and recuperate for the next day.

The next day we are awoken in the morning by the sounds of crows. Hundreds of them and even of multiple species that seem to be attracted by our area and the nearby park. They plant themselves wherever there is space which also leads to a few altercations between them for better spots.

As the cold symptoms of our relative persist we decide to eat on our separate levels in the morning to ensure we are not going to catch it and then wear masks whenever together the following days until she recuperates.

Today during the day we decide to visit a few sites in Lahemaa National Park. Unfortunately the weather is cold and rainy so we are not sure how much we can visit but we can’t just stay inside the house no matter how nice and big it is. First stop is in Haljala close to Rakvere however unfortunately the old church is under renovation so we stop only for a short while to see the old town hall of the city first mentioned in 1241 before continuing on.

After visiting Lahemaa and before returning to the AirBnB we also take a short tour of Rakvere. We planned initially to walk the downtown area but given that our relative is sick it is more of a auto tour seeing the castle and a few other sights before returning to the AirBnB. And now it is time for a bear adventure, sleeping with the bears for the night.

After seeing the bears it is time to pack our bags and say good bye to the nice Airbnb and the crows surrounding it. Actually now that I think about it it might have been a great place for a horror movie as the crows are always hanging around, always watching.

We don’t go far, first stop is Rakvere to see the Orthodox Church and to get a Covid testing kit to understand if our sick relative might have Covid, hopefully not but still until it is confirmed either way we take max precautions along the way.

The church itself is more interesting than we expected, it has a relic that you can actually seeand an glitzy altar that we admire before moving on, south towards Latvia.
