Koloa Heritage Trail

Satiated we continue exploring the Koloa area following roughly the Koloa Heritage Trail from where we selected the stops that we think are most interesting to us. The first one after lunch is at Prince Kuhio Birthplace and Park. Prince Kuhio was the grandson of the last king of Kauai and one of the first Hawaii delegates to the US Congress. The site is owned privately but can be accessed freely during the day if open.

Next stop is the locally famous Spouting Horn. It is a spectacular blowhole that can be viewed from an overlook in the nearby Spouting Horn park. The fountain can be 60 or more feet high under ideal conditions but it is smaller on a day to day basis.

Then we drive to the historic city of Koloa, a former sugar mill city now transformed into a city of small galleries and restaurants. We first stop at the historic area where all the food trucks are but they are closed (it is 3 PM so we didn’t expect that) and then drive a few hundred feet to the downtown area.

We visit multiple shops and even taste test multiple macademia varieties before settling on a couple to bring home. The other attraction downtown is the Koloa Jodo Mission, a Buddhist temple built in 1910 serving the Japanese community in the area.
