After our week plus stay in Cluj Napoca we drive south towards Sebes with our family with the plan being to stay one night in Sebes and then swap families and continue from there with our second family. On the way we pass a few fortified churches but all of them are closed including the one in Aiud we wanted to visit for some time.
One of the weirdest things we see on the way is a seemingly new house with a door on the second floor leading directly outside, no balcony or anything. It seems like a movie trap or something like that but it is a serious lived in house, weird.
We arrive in Sebes and after some time find the reception and then get our rooms. And then we have to exchange our elder relative room, even though we requested specifically one with an elevator close by she received one multiple stairs up to climb which is impossible for her. At least our rooms are impressively large and have some nice views of the downtown.
Next we go outside exploring the downtown a bit. We have only one day to explore the city and while small we want to be able to visit all attractions.
One of them is really close by, Turnul Semicircular or Smith’s Tower. It was part of Sebes’ fortifications before being used for housing and now as a museum. A closed museum unfortunately. So we go to the local history museum which is open and described here followed by the local fortified church described here before exploring a nearby Unesco World Heritage Site, the Calnic fortress, described here.
Returning in town we have time to follow the streets that were built when the old walls were torn down, they are making a circle around the downtown area. There are some nice buildings here both old and new and we enjoy our walk as we wait for our last set of relatives to arrive.
As they are stuck in traffic we decide to start with dinner as it is quite difficult to find a table. Finally the last set of relatives arrives and then it is time for a long dinner with everyone being happy to see everyone else and then we go to sleep as tomorrow we have a very busy day planned.
