This Memorial Day weekend we are exploring the Southeast of Arizona. We always wanted to visit the Dragoon Mountains so we decide to stay at their base in a quasi religious compound while exploring the surrounding area. Besides the Dragoon Mountains and the Chiricahua Mountains we also explore multiple ghost towns ending the trip in famous Tombstone. Unfortunately the weather is quite hot during our trip so many hikes had to be cut short or were relatively uncomfortable, we should have known better than going to this area so late in the year.

  • A short stop at Sweetwater Wetlands
Our first stop on our trip is in Tucson for a short visit to Sweetwater Wetlands to see some birds before buying Mexican takeout and taking it to our resort
  • Living in a “religious compound”
During the long Memorial weekend we stay at a quasi religious compound that is renting a few rooms on AirBnB and is mostly deserted otherwise
  • Getting burned on the Cochise Trail
In the morning we climb the Dragoon Mountains to explore Cochise Stronghold until it gets to hot
  • Exploring the Amerind Museum
We spend the afternoon exploring the surprisingly large and interesting Amerind Museum sitting seemingly in the middle of nothing
  • Round the impressive Echo Canyon Loop
Today we spend the day exploring the busy Echo Canyon Loop high in the Chiricahuas with special rock formations to explore and investigate
  • Really short visit to Fort Bowie
Late afternoon we explore Fort Bowie area but it is too hot to hike fully to the ruins so we make only a short exploration hike
  • Well preserved Pearce Jail
We start the ghost town trail with a stop in Pearce to examine the still standing historical jail
  • Exploring Courtland Ghost Town
On the Ghost Town Trail we then explore Courtland with the ruins and interesting jail and then finish with the private Gleeson Jail
  • Tombstone, the famous Western town
We end our trip in Tombstone the most famous historic town in Arizona and a major attraction in Southeast Arizona
