We are for a few days in Washington for a conference and as such we use the free time to walk through the downtown area exploring both the National Mall and entering the Capitol and White House compound. Afterwards we spend a couple of days exploring the battlefields around Washington with the major stop being Antietam National Battlefield and visiting briefly all four surrounding states.

- Entering and investigating the US CapitolPart of today’s walk is to enter and investigate the US Capitol finding rooms of famous senators and walking on the corridors where history has been written
- Exploring the expansive National MallWe spend most of the second day exploring the expansive National Mall from one end to the other and visiting the Lincoln Memorial
- Visit to the White House, inside and outside at the same timeWe start our third day in Washigton with a visit to the White House with hordes of other people getting closer to the White House than in the previous days
- Ford’s Theater, the place where Lincoln was killedDuring our trip we wanted to visit Ford’s Theater the place where Abe Lincoln was killed which is a museum now with quite a few exhibits
- A visit to the American Art MuseumWe end the day with a visit at the American Art Museum enjoying the exhibits especially those focused on nature and the modern art section
- Potomac Overlook Park…with no overlookWe start our four states day with a visit to the Potomac Overlook Park to see the overlook which unfortunately is closed
- Short stop in Cabin John Regional ParkFirst stop in Maryland is Cabin John Regional Park with beautiful fall colors to see and some caches to find
- Monocacy, the battle that saved Washington, D.C.We continue north with a stop at Monocacy to learn about a Civil War Battle that we knew little about but was important for the survival of Washington
- Battle of Antietam, the bloodiest one-day battle for USALast is a visit to Antietam where a major attack of the pro-slavery secessionist states was repulsed with great losses leading ultimately to the Emancipation Declaration
- A double battle at Manassas National BattlefieldOn the last day before leaving we visit Manassas National Battlefield the site of two Union defeats during the Civil War
