Escaping the rain in the Lava River Cave

After a restless night of camping we make up to cloudy skies and rain. This doesn’t detract us from our next goal the Lava River Cave. In fact it makes it even more attractive as we can hopefully evade the rain while exploring the cave. The roads are wet but passable and soon we are at the entrance.

Surprisingly it is quite well signposted and there is information about the cave at the entrance including a good map. We take a photo of the map and then in we go.

We are well prepared with flashlights and this is good as it gets dark quite fast as we leave the entrance behind us while stepping carefully on the volcanic boulders on the floor.

Reaching the bottom the lava tube is actually quite smooth and an easy walk. It also has a surprisingly high ceiling, it feels like we are in a cathedral and it isn’t at all cramped.

That is until we reach the end where the lava tube collapsed and of course the ceiling meets the ground. This is our turnaround point and soon we return back to the entrance and lo and behold it doesn’t rain anymore and the weather is looking up. Therefore we decide to go to the next stop planned a series of caches celebrating Saturn and placed in the form of the planet and its rings.
